Summary:

Oro met d.o.o. designs 100% recyclable steel products, reuses all by-products, and powers production with solar energy and recovered heat.

Main description:

ORO MET is one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of standard and non-standard CNC machined tooling plates up to 15 tonnes, for all types of tools and housings (plastic, rubber, die casting and metal forming tools), based on the customer’s drawings or designs, or according to standard dimensions. The company was founded in 2004 as part of the HTS Groupe.

Their primary material is steel, a resource they use with high efficiency and sustainability in mind. All production by-products—whether raw material waste, rejected products, or even written-off items—are repurposed, repaired, or recycled. Nothing is discarded as rubbish, reflecting a near-zero-waste philosophy.

Problem Identification in the Manufacturing Process

Despite their success in minimizing waste, Oro met faced several challenges in integrating circular economy (CE) principles more deeply into their high-precision production system. These issues were identified through internal assessments and included:

  • Technical Challenge: The complexity of product design, driven by the need for extremely high precision, made it difficult and costly to introduce more flexible or circular methods.
  • Financial Challenges: Implementing new CE practices raised concerns about uncertain returns on investment and increased operational costs.
  • Supply Chain and Market Barriers: Oro met encountered complexity in logistics and reverse logistics, limited consumer demand for sustainable products, and a highly competitive market environment where sustainability features were often undervalued by customers.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution letraset sheets of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less making it look like readable content of a page when layout English.

Resources needed:

The main technical challenges they face are complexity in product design. As they mentioned, their production processes are very constrained and require high precision, which makes it very financially expensive for them to be able to implement new principles.

Environmental benefits:
  • They focus their production on using their resources very efficiently. One example of that is that they capture all of the heat produced from their production processes.
  • Product Design for Circularity: All products are designed to be 100% recyclable, allowing steel components to be repurposed with minimal energy loss.
  • Energy Efficiency: The company installed a large solar power plant on its roof, supplying nearly all its electricity needs. Additionally, waste heat from manufacturing processes is recovered to heat factory and office spaces.
  • Digitalization and Partnerships: Oro met invests in digital systems to optimize operations and collaborates with partners to ensure that waste materials find new life in other industries.
Economic benefits:

Resource Efficiency and Life Extension: Waste materials are reused or sold to other companies. Faulty products are repaired or melted down and reintroduced into the production cycle.

All above mentioned environmental solutions also help them save money and use their resources mores efficiently. While challenges remain—particularly around costs and market awareness—their model provides a strong example of circular manufacturing in practice.
